Due to the city's burgeoning arts scene, the art galleries of New Orleans remain some of the best and most diverse in the USA. Displays range from African-American art to contemporary works and modern abstracts, with numerous trendy venues often being nothing more than converted warehouses.

Over the years, the city of New Orleans has become a definite haven for artists and bohemian-types, making areas such as the Warehouse District, Julia Street and Uptown a paradise for art lovers and café junkies alike. Galleries that stand out in particular include the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), where the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is a real treat. The Academy of Fine Arts (NOAFA) on Magazine Street is also recommended, together with the Ogden Museum of Southern Art on Camp Street.



New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA)

Opened in 1911, this popular museum is located within the grounds of the scenic City Park. The building is a work of art in itself and houses extensive collections of pre-Columbian art, native American ethnographic art, European paintings, drawings and sculptures, Asian Art and a superb decorative glass display. Also on offer here are regular temporary exhibits and displays. Nearby attractions include the Sculpture Garden, the Pavilion of the Two Sisters and the Tad Gormley Stadium.

Arthur Roger Gallery

This is a hip gallery home to paintings, sculptures and photography along abstract and modern lines by names such as John Waters, Jésus Morales and Allison Stuart. The Children's Museum is close by and may also be of interest if you have time to spare.

New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts (NOAFA)

This school of fine arts was established in the late 1970s and operates as a non-profit institution, being founded in an attempt to encourage local artists and teach them a range of classical techniques. Visitors will find a gallery space, a framing shop, painting studios and life-drawing workshops. The Academy of Fine Arts stands on Magazine Street, just off Bellecastle Street and Valmont Street, and is often abbreviated as simply the 'NOAFA'.

Contemporary Arts Center

This establishment forms the center of the New Orleans art scene, with regular exhibitions of famous local, national and international art works. Exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center are staggered and last up to two months, ensuring there is always something fresh to see. Also on offer are music, theater and dance performances.

Ogden Museum of Southern Art
